Missionary Justin Gillet arrived in Congo in 1893. He created the botanical gardens of Kisantu and dedicated his whole life to them until his death in 1943. The park contained a wildlife reserve, vegetable plots and an arboretum where indigenous species were grown. Amongst the trees and plants that flourished in the park were palm trees, giant bamboos, teak, aquatic plants, orchids, ginger, mangosteens and Brazilian walnut trees, After Gillet's death a farmers' co-op in Kisantu was created in 1951, which cultivated crops of all sorts of vegetables.
