A Greek artisan is commissioned to cast the cup of Christ in silver, and sculpt around its rim, the faces of the disciples and Jesus. He travels to Jerusalem and eventually to Rome to complete the task. Meanwhile, a nefarious interloper is trying to convince the crowds that he is the new Messiah, by using nothing more than cheap parlor tricks.

电影节奏太慢了，幸亏是个彩色。弗吉尼亚梅奥妖艳的不敢认，金发的16岁娜塔莉伍德一股少年感，皮耶尔纯真美丽，纽曼是活体雕塑。
这部片子最大的问题就是剧本，两个小时下来感觉别的事情都讲了，就这个作为标题的圣杯作用几乎没有……魔术师Simon就是典型的忽悠别人时间长了反过来觉得自己是真神仙的无脑自信代表……虽然PN本人也特别不喜欢这部自己的处女作，但谁叫他太适合这种雕塑真人化的造型呢，Pier Angeli也美，俊男美女还有长得像纪念碑谷里场景的耶路撒冷，浪费了啊。两星半

电视台要重播这部电影前，纽曼曾登报为自己的表演道歉，说这是1950年代拍的最差影片，呼吁大家别看。结果适得其反，该片收视率大增，毕竟大家都好奇纽曼在处女作里有多美……其实他早年选中这片子也不意外，人人都觉得他像是希腊雕塑嘛，该作也就是平庸无聊，还不至于烂得看不下去。

电影几乎没能给纽曼表演的机会，电影本身的主题也耐人寻味，公元1世纪罗马帝国压迫各地人民，一部分人想反抗，而基督徒们仁爱却扼杀这些人的反抗，魔术师的奇迹也暗示了合理的怀疑，电影中反映了宫廷奢华，以及当时人骑骆驼频繁穿越沙漠并在骆驼上使用短刀，军队使用长矛的特征
