The story of a young fisherman and his dreams of becoming a jockey in Mauritius.
Every year on the remote island of Mauritius, a legendary race takes place... 15-year-old Alvinio Roy has always dreamed of riding a horse in the Maiden Cup. He wakes up at 4:00 am every day to work as a stable boy in exchange for riding lessons. All he wants is to participate in the Sport of Kings. In Mauritius, horse racing is just one remain of the British Empire. The secluded island's culture, from food to language to sport, is a muddle of residual customs left by its many colonial mothers. Through the eyes of Roy, a gambling Rastafarian, a bookie, an Irish jockey, and the owner of the oldest stables in the southern hemisphere, I've Seen the Unicorn looks at how one sport - the Sport of Kings - can help to give identity to a lost post-colonial society and turn dreams into reality.
